9 GOVT AGENCIES, INCLUDING MACC, WILL REPORT DIRECTLY TO PARLIAMENT

9 agencies will operate as independent bodies, says report

-

LOCAL media report some major changes are expected in the Prime Minister’s Department. This includes the abolishment of several offices, including that of the special envoy on Infrastructure to India and South Asia and the special envoy to China.

The tenure of Tun S. Samy Vellu, the special envoy on Infrastructure to India and South Asia, will end once his contract expires in December.

The special envoy to China, Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting, resigned from the post earlier this year.

Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim, who is the sociocultural adviser to the government, ended his tenure yesterday.

He recently joined Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia.

A local daily, citing a letter to the Prime Minister’s Department it sighted, reported these changes, adding that nine government agencies would be operating as independent bodies from yesterday.

Following the move, these bodies will report directly to Parliament.

The letter was said to have been from the Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa, approving the scrapping of 10 departments and agencies and 19 smaller divisions or offices under the Prime Minister’s Office.

Among the agencies now operating as independent entities are the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, the Election Commission, the National Audit Department, The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) and the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The Attorney-General’s Chambers, however, remains within the Prime Minister’s Department but the daily reported that its prosecuting functions were placed under the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Also to report directly to Parliament are the Public Service Commission, the Education Service Commission and the Judicial Appointments Commission.

Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s National Transformation 2050, or TN50, will see its secretariat abolished.
