Mas Ermieyati quits Umno

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Masjid Tanah member of parliament Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin has quit Umno, saying that it had strayed from its struggles, which caused Malays to reject the 72-year-old party.

The former Puteri Umno chief said the decision was made without influence from any party.

“The Umno leadership refused to accept that people are rejecting Umno.

“Instead, they continue to believe that the party was a victim of the people’s hatred for Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

“People made fun of Umno because of the 1MDB (1Malaysia Development Bhd) scandal,” she said.

“Yesterday (party polls) was (supposed to be) a turning point to determine the direction of the party. However, we can see from the members’ reaction and sentiment that they are still in denial.

“The hope of seeing at least 70 new faces with calibre at various levels (of leadership) did not materialise.

“What kind of rejuvenation is this, if the virus is being let loose and when the medicine is too hard to swallow?

“Sincerely, I can say that Umno has strayed from its original path until the party has been rejected by Malays,” she said yesterday.

She said she would continue serving her constituency as an independent representative.

“With my experience as a lawyer, I hope to carry out my duties to the best of my ability to ensure the executive body (government) is monitored by an effective Parliament.”
