THE Sarawak government yesterday began exercising its power under the state laws relating to oil and gas activities, including the Gas Distribution Ordinance 2016.

A statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office said regulations made under the ordinance on licensing had been approved by the state government and the implementation would commence immediately.

“As for state laws that are in force, such as the Oil Mining Ordinance 1958 and the Land Code 1958, the state authorities will ensure the compliance of the laws, including gathering information from industry players and creating a more comprehensive engagement with all parties.”

In March, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Abang Openg announced that the state would assume regulatory authority over the upstream and downstream aspects of the oil and gas industry, as part of the devolution of powers.

Those involved in oil and gas industries in Sarawak must apply for licences and permits required under the Oil Mining Ordinance 1958 or the Gas Distribution Ordinance 2016 from the state government.

He had said that industry players could conduct their businesses as usual in Sarawak until the end of next year, but they must comply with state laws.
