Kirandeep scores in thumping win for women’s team

expected, the national women’s team thrashed Thailand 6-0 to win the Hockey Series Open title at the Seng Kang Stadium yesterday.

It was also a memorable final for Kirandeep Kaur as the 14year-old scored her first internatio­nal goal in the 30th minute.

Kirandeep must thank coach K. Dharmaraj for giving her an opportunit­y to play for the senior side for the first time. The youngster featured in every match in the tournament.

For the record, Kirandeep has yet to play for the national women’s junior team.

The other goals were scored by Fatin Shafika Shukri (second and fifth minutes), Surizan Awang Noh (eighth), Nuraini Rashid (51st) and Nur Amirah Shakirah (56th).

Team manager Lailin Abu Hassan said: “We only defeated the Thais 4-0 in the preliminar­y round and today we scored two additional goals against them in the final. This indicates progress.

“We also gave our youngsters more playing time throughout the tournament and this paid off when Kirandeep netted her first internatio­nal goal,” said Lailin.
