SHOPEE, one of Southeast Asia’s and Taiwan’s largest e-commerce platforms, brightened up Berita Harian’s 61st birthday celebration by presenting the Malay daily with a commemorative cake at Balai Berita in Jalan Riong here yesterday.

The cake, which resembled the daily’s front page, was accompanied by another cake for Berita Harian’s sister publication, the New Straits Times, in conjunction with the latter’s upcoming 173rd anniversary.

Present were Shopee regional managing director Ian Ho, category manager (business development) Calvin Teng, marketing public relations) senior associate Sharon Rose Roberts and assistant manager (business development) Sandra Yam Su-Wen.

They took part in a cake-cutting ceremony attended by Berita Harian executive editor Datuk Ahmad Zaini Kamaruzzaman and NST executive editor Muzli Md Zin.

Ho said the offering was a gesture of goodwill to signify the close working relationship Shopee enjoyed with BH, NST and the New Straits Times Press (NSTP).

“We have worked with both publications for years and they (NSTP) have always supported us.”

On Shopee, he said the company had always prioritised its customers since its establishment in 2015.

He said measures had been put in place to safeguard the interests of its shoppers.

“The Shopee Guarantee is a way for us to protect customers. When a customer makes a payment, it is held in Escrow by us, and we will only release the payment (to the seller) when the buyer is happy.

“On how to choose sellers, we have classified our sellers into two categories — ‘Shopee mall’ and ‘preferred seller’.”

Shopee mall, he said, featured only big brands, such as L’Oreal and Unilever, while the preferred seller category comprised sellers that had passed the company’s criteria in terms of sales and shop rating.

“The third service that we recommend to customers is the ‘chat’ function. We allow customers to talk directly to sellers and we hope that, when communicating, problems can be avoided before buying any product.”

He said Shopee used only the best delivery services, such as Pos Laju.
