Malaysian quartet take bronze in team event
MALAYSIA earned a bronze medal in the girls’ team event at the World Youth Championships in Detroit on Thursday.
The quartet of Nur Syazwani Sahar, Nur Ameerahusna Aznel, Nur Amirah Auni Azman and Gillian Lim were edged 189-162, 224-173 by the United States, comprising Caitlyn Johnson, Mabel Cummins, Taylor Bailey and Breanna Clemmer in the semifinals at the Thuderbowl Lanes in Allen Park.
In the other last-four match, Sweden’s Sofia Myllymaki, Hanna Engberg, Alida Molander and Cajsa Wegner settled for jointbronze as they went down 255212, 243-216 to South Korea (Kim Jinju, Hyeonji Son, Lee Jungmin, Hong Sunhwa).
The US bounced back from a first game blemish to overcome Korea 180-205, 214-181, 230-175 for the title.
Nur Syazwani, who won the allevents gold on Wednesday, also did well to advance to the quarter-finals of the masters with a 203-193, 185-178 win over Puerto Rican Estefania Cobo.
In the boys’ masters, Shahrukh Amin Zulkifli also made the lasteight with a 200-191, 226-155 win over Benjamin Martinez of Mexico.
Team manager Maradona Chok said: “Our girls struggled a bit and the US were at the top of their game. They pressured our girls from the start.
“It is, however, still a good performance from my girls.
“For the masters event, Shahrukh, who is making his debut, and Syazwani were comfortable and I believe they can go far,” said Maradona yesterday.
Tun Hakim Tun Hasnul Azam’s run in the masters came to an end in the last-16 following a 256192, 223-177 defeat to Kuwait’s Mostafa Almousawi.
Shahrukh and Syazwani played Qatar’s Ghanim Aboujassoum and Mexico’s Raquel Orozco in their respective quarter-final matches late yesterday.
In the men’s team, Qatar defeated Finland 239-238, 233-199 for the gold, while the Philippines and Japan were bronze medallists.
