Azman exits Axiata board

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Axiata Group Bhd yesterday announced the resignation of Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar as the company’s chairman, non-independent non-executive director and representative of Khazanah Nasional Bhd after 10 years of exemplary services.

In a statement yesterday, Axiata said it had firmly established itself as one of the largest telecom groups in Asia during Azman’s tenure.

The group’s revenue more than doubled to hit RM24 billion while its market capitalisation improved 1.8 times from RM28.3 billion at its initial public offering in 2008 to RM49.6 billion at end-December last year.

Axiata’s customer base had increased from 40 million to 350 million with presence in 11 countries, making it the secondlargest telecom group in Asean and South Asia.

Axiata president and group chief executive officer Tan Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim said Azman had given the company the mandate to make Axiata a regional champion by 2015.

“That evolved into a grand vision to establish Axiata as a truly ‘multinational company’, to proudly carry the Malaysian flag across the region and to become one of the best professionally-run companies to achieve exceptional performance and integrity,” he said.

Jamaludin said Azman had consistently advised the management to focus on creating longterm value for shareholders rather than purely on short-term profits.
