Dr M: Theme park can draw more tourists to Langkawi

-

A theme park is another product that can be developed in Langkawi to attract more tourists to the island, said Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday.

He said the island had enough land to start such a project, adding that some Malaysian companies had demonstrated the capability to implement it.

“Many have been involved in this area (working on theme parks) and they have received good responses,” he said at the opening of Langkawi Nature Park, the island’s newest tourist attraction.

Dr Mahathir said international events such as the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (Lima) since the 1990s had attracted a large number of tourists, but that the event was only for a few days.

“Lima is held only for four days. We want a tourism project that can attract tourists throughout the year and this can be done through a theme park project.”

He said his government had some plans to attract more tourists to the island.

Among them was providing facilities for tourism products in the mountains and islands around Langkawi.
