JB City Council kicks off National Day celebration
JOHOR BARU: The Johor Baru City Council kicked off Bulan Merdeka celebrations by flying the Jalur Gemilang during its “JB Wake Up! Car Free Day” programme here yesterday.
Mayor Amran A. Rahman said the initiative was in line with efforts to educate the community on the need for multiracial interaction, which was important in promoting unity, harmony and tolerance.
He said the differences in race, religion and background was not a barrier to celebrating unity and harmony together.
“This Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign will be able to realise the city council’s efforts to unite Malaysians to gather and celebrate the upcoming National Day.
“The city council will issue circulars to traders and special premises in its administrative area to fly the Jalur Gemilang at their premises.”
He said this after completing the city council-level Bulan Merdeka celebrations. Present was Stulang assemblyman Andrew Chen Kah Eng.
More than 300 participants, including members of the public, city council staff and schoolchildren, were entertained by aerobics exercises, cultural performances and exhibitions by the Johor Biotechnology and Biodiversity Corporation.
They also took part in a 3.5km bicycle ride.
Amran said besides celebrating National Day, the programme also promoted environmental sustainability to the public.
“This initiative is a platform for the city council to educate the public on the importance of preserving and conserving the environment for the wellbeing of future generations.”
