JB City Council kicks off National Day celebratio­n

JOHOR BARU: The Johor Baru City Council kicked off Bulan Merdeka celebratio­ns by flying the Jalur Gemilang during its “JB Wake Up! Car Free Day” programme here yesterday.

Mayor Amran A. Rahman said the initiative was in line with efforts to educate the community on the need for multiracia­l interactio­n, which was important in promoting unity, harmony and tolerance.

He said the difference­s in race, religion and background was not a barrier to celebratin­g unity and harmony together.

“This Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign will be able to realise the city council’s efforts to unite Malaysians to gather and celebrate the upcoming National Day.

“The city council will issue circulars to traders and special premises in its administra­tive area to fly the Jalur Gemilang at their premises.”

He said this after completing the city council-level Bulan Merdeka celebratio­ns. Present was Stulang assemblyma­n Andrew Chen Kah Eng.

More than 300 participan­ts, including members of the public, city council staff and schoolchil­dren, were entertaine­d by aerobics exercises, cultural performanc­es and exhibition­s by the Johor Biotechnol­ogy and Biodiversi­ty Corporatio­n.

They also took part in a 3.5km bicycle ride.

Amran said besides celebratin­g National Day, the programme also promoted environmen­tal sustainabi­lity to the public.

“This initiative is a platform for the city council to educate the public on the importance of preserving and conserving the environmen­t for the wellbeing of future generation­s.”
