Aaron-Wooi Yik ready to take on Asia

- Talkah Helmi

Chia and Soh Wooi Yik are ready for the challenge, if the men’s badminton doubles are selected for the Asian Games in Indonesia on Aug 19-28.

Earlier, the BAM revealed that the young duo will be considered for the Games, following their explosive showing at the World Championships in Nanjing, China.

However, should Aaron-Wooi Yik make the trip for the Asiad in Jakarta, BAM will have to drop one of the two pairs - Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong and Ong Yew SinTeo Ee Yi - named initially.

“We are always ready. If we are given the opportunity to play in the Asian Games, we will will take it.

“But right now, we don’t want to worry too much about it. Let’s allow BAM to make the final decision,” said Aaron yesterday.

Aaron-Wooi Yik’s fairy tale began when they made the cut for the world meet at the eleventh hour, following the withdrawals of other pairs from different countries.

Aaron, 21, and Wooi Yik, 20, then went on play to their best badminton since coming together as a pair last year, reaching the quarter-finals, before losing 21-14, 24-22 to fourth seeds Li Junhui-Liu Yuchen of China on Friday.

One of the pair’s biggest achievements in the competition, was stunning world No 8 Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark in straight games 2118, 21-16 in the third round on Thursday.

For Aaron-Wooi Yik, this is just the start to many great things as they continue to dream of becoming world and Olympic champions one day.
