Leicester to show possession game at United, says Schmeichel

-

LONDON: Leicester City will adopt a more possession-based game this season instead of their traditional counter-attacking style but will not find the transition easy when they visit Manchester United today, goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has said.

Leicester showed glimpses of the switch last season after Claude Puel took charge of the club in October but attempting to take the game to United at Old Trafford in their Premier League opener will be a challenge, the 31year-old Dane conceded.

“We’ve classically been a counter-attacking type of side. The manager now wants us to try and take a bit more control of the game, to try and dominate possession a little bit more,” Schmeichel told the club website.

“It’s going to be difficult away from home at Manchester United, but it’s something that we’re going to have to be brave enough to try.”

Meanwhile, Leicester have signed Croatian defender Filip Benkovic from Dinamo Zagreb on a five-year deal yesterday.

Leicester did not disclose the transfer fee but British media reports said the 21-year-old cost about £13 million (RM68 million).

Benkovic, a Croatian under-21 international, arrives at the King Power Stadium after an impressive 2017-18 campaign with Zagreb in which he made 30 appearances in all competitions and helped them clinch the Croatian league title.

“Filip is an exciting young player who has the potential to develop even more at Leicester,” Puel told the club website.
