Baby suffers broken arm likely from alleged abuse

-

PARIT: A 3-month-old baby believed to have been abused by his babysitter was rushed to hospital on Wednesday with a broken right arm.

Authorities at Seri Manjung Hospital in Lumut determined that the baby’s arm had been violently twisted, causing it to break, Bernama reported.

Following the assessment, the baby’s father lodged a report on Wednesday and the child minder — a 42-year-old woman from Seri Iskandar — was detained a few hours later.

The incident unfolded when the baby’s father received a call from the babysitter, informing him that his son was “crying non-stop”.

The father rushed to the child minder’s house and was shocked to see the condition of his baby’s arm, which was badly contorted and swollen. When he asked what had happened, the babysitter said the infant had somehow “sprained his own hand”.

According to Bernama, the father then rushed his son to Changkat Melintang Hospital, but authorities referred the baby to Seri Manjung Hospital.

The baby’s mother, who wants to be known only as “Akma”, said her son was under the woman’s care for just two hours before her husband received the phone call.

Akma, 28, said her son was in terrible pain and would cry whenever she touched his right hand.

Perak Tengah district police chief Superintendent Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said the woman would be remanded four days from yesterday to assist in investigations under Section 325 of the Penal Code for causing serious injury, and Section 31 (1) under the Child Act 2001.
