One gold target to be powerhouse again

- Zain Azlan Muhammad

Malaysian sepak takraw squad must land at least one gold medal at the Asian Games in Indonesia if they want to be recognised as a powerhouse once again.

Although it is still unclear if the team will participate in the regu event (due to technical problems at the draw ceremony last month), it is seen as Malaysia's best chance to win gold.

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), however, have already instructed the Indonesian Asian Games Organising Committee (INASGOC) to include Malaysia in the list, following the technical glitch.

In the absence of Thailand, who will not compete in the regu event, Malaysia's main challenge is only expected to come from Indonesia and South Korea.

Once again, the main duty will rest on the shoulders of tekong Mohd Syahir Rosdi, who is expected to deliver the points from consistent services.

Having said that, Malaysia cannot take Indonesia lightly as they will go all out especially in front of their home fans.

Since last winning gold at the 1990 edition in Beijing, Malaysia hope to finally break the duck following good preparation by the Malaysia Sepaktakraw Association (PSM).

In the team regu event, favourites Thailand are expected to retain the gold medal, since winning it consecutively from 1998.

The Malaysian women's squad, on the other hand, were hoping to deliver at least a bronze, but in the absence of their main tekong, Siti Zubaidah Che Ab Wahab, it may be a tall order.
