Bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression)
A mental illness marked by extreme mood swings from high to low, and from low to high.
BIPOLAR I
At least one manic episode lasting for more than one week Untreated, it can last 3 to 6 months.
Depressive episodes last 6 to 12 months without treatment.
RAPID CYCLING
More than four mood swings in a 12-month period.
CYCLOTHYMIA
The mood swings are not as severe but can be longer. It can develop into full bipolar disorder.
MIXED BIPOLAR
Mixture of mania and depression.
BIPOLAR II
More than one episode of severe depression, but only mild manic episodes (hypomania).
Signs of mania
Feeling overly happy or high for long periods of time
Having a decreased need for sleep
Talking very fast, often with racing thoughts
Feeling extremely restless or impulsive
Becoming easily distracted
Having overconfidence
Signs of depression
Feeling sad or hopeless for long periods of time
Withdrawing from friends and family
Losing interest in activities that they once enjoyed
Havinga significant change in appetite
Feeling severe fatigue or lack of energy
Problems with memory, concentration and decision making
Thinking about or attempting suicide
