IGP: Officers involved in wrongdoings, illegal activities to face the music

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have vowed to take drastic action against their personnel who are found to be involved in wrongdoings and illegal activities.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said several senior officers and rank-and-file personnel had been identified and set to face punishment, ranging from disciplinary action to immediate transfer.

“We are serious when it comes to one of our own getting involved in wrongdoings and illegal activities, such as gambling, graft and extortion, especially the frontliners.

“These personnel, not just the police chiefs, but also state police chiefs and heads of the criminal investigation units, will face disciplinary action or transfer if they fail to curb criminal activities in their areas,” he told a press conference in Bukit Aman yesterday.

Fuzi said from January to May, 926 police personnel had faced action by Bukit Aman’s Integrity and Standard Compliance Department.

“It is saddening to hear that 149 police personnel have been detained by the Malaysian AntiCorruption Commission (MACC) last year for graft-related offences,” he said.

“In 2016, 179 policemen were detained by MACC. Although there is a drop in the figure, the negative perception on the force is evident.”

Fuzi said the Integrity and Standard Compliance Department would continue monitoring the force to ensure all officers and personnel comply with the integrity guidelines.
