DISABILITY NOT A HURDLE FOR RAZAK

Amputee happy to perform haj with help of wife and daughter

- MAKKAH

ABDUL Razak Said was in a coma for a month and had his right leg amputated following a road accident in 2005. He feels blessed to have been able to make it through that dark period and doubly so now that he has been given the opportunity to fulfil the fifth pillar of Islam this year.

The 67-year-old from Alor Star, Kedah, will perform the haj with his wife, Juairiah Abd Wahab, 65, and daughter, Nur Adnin Abd Razak, 28, who have been caring for him since the accident.

It was something they prayed for when they performed the umrah, or minor haj, together in 2012.

Razak, who has been unable to work since the accident, is grateful for their presence as they help him move around the accommodation and to the mosque.

Juairiah and Nur Adnin take turns to push him on his wheelchair.

“I am thankful to Tabung Haji for allowing my family to share a room so that my wife and daughter can help me,” Razak said.

He has a prosthetic leg but finds it uncomfortable to wear, especially for long periods.

Juairiah said this was something none of them expected 13 years ago.

“He was returning from his shift as a security guard to our home in Taman Pelangi at 6am when the accident happened. He was on his motorcycle and it was raining. A bus ran into him at the traffic light.

“He was in a coma and in intensive care for a month.

“We were elated when he regained consciousness.”

Doctors, however, could not save his leg.

Nur Adnin has been the main caregiver since. She looks out for her mother, who constantly has backaches, too.

She said she made sure her father ate properly as he had hypertension and diabetes.

She checks Razak’s blood sugar level daily, even here.

“He is strong willed and independent. We are grateful as things have been smooth for us.

“Everyone has been helpful, even on our flight to the Holy Land.

“I hope Allah will ease everything for us, especially during the masyair period when we move from here to Arafah, Muzdalifah and Mina,” said Nur Adnin, who is pursuing a diploma at Institut Latihan Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia.
