Goal is to just win a bout

- Fauzi Ferzalfie

Wei Fu is Malaysia’s sole judo exponent at the Asian Games and his goal is to win only a bout.

Team manager Othman Nizam Yoe said Wei Fu is an experienced judoka, but it will not be easy in Indonesia as the Asian Games is like a mini Olympics.

“The best exponents in judo come from Japan, South Korea, Mongolia and Central Asia, and all are world class. Some have even won Olympic titles, so we need to be realistic about Wei Fu’s target.

“It would be great if he can reach the second round in the 66kg event. Wei Fu’s participation in the Asian Games is already a victory for us as we did not have a representative at the 2014 Incheon edition.”

Wei Fu’s best result was winning a silver medal at last year’s Kuala Lumpur Sea Games.

“Wei Fu has been training in Kluang for the Asian Games and he is in good form,” he added.

Judo offers 15 gold medals.
