COPS: BUS DRIVER HIGH ON DRUGS
He was high on meth during road rampage, says KL police chief
POLICE have confirmed the 32-year-old RapidKL bus driver who ploughed through seven vehicles along Jalan Ampang on Thursday night was high on methamphetamine when the incident happened.
City police chief Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said the man was under police custody to facilitate investigation under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving.
“The investigation is jointly conducted by city police and Selangor police. The man was detained by Ampang police as the first incident took place in the area.
“We are investigating the case,” he said yesterday.
It was reported that at least four people were injured in the 8.30pm incident.
The incident unfolded at a traffic light junction at AU Keramat, where the bus had swerved to avoid hitting a motorcycle.
However, in evading the motorcycle, the bus grazed the corner of a roadside burger stall located near the junction.
According to a witness who posted the incident on Facebook, the bus driver had stopped at the scene to check on the damage to the stall, as well as the condition of a woman and an infant near the stall.
“However, he noticed that the stall operator and a group of men were charging towards him. The driver immediately fled the scene.”
The witness wrote that the stall operator and the group of men gave chase on their motorcycles.
The incident was recorded on a mobile phone by the stall operator.
The bus driver can be seen speeding off in a RapidKL bus, with the group behind him.
In his bid to escape the motorcyclists, the speeding bus manoeuvered dangerously through traffic and crashed into seven cars as he sped down Jalan Ampang before coming to a stop at the Jalan Ampang-MRR2 junction.
The driver got out of the bus and tried to flee, but was apprehended by the motorcyclists.
The driver was jeered at before the group became aggressive and kicked and punched him.
