‘Not fair to focus only on qualification’

BANGI: MCA’s candidate for the Balakong by-election, Tan Chee Teong, is urging voters to look beyond his education background and to consider efforts he has made to help locals resolve their problems.

“Despite my efforts of helping the people here, there are those who say I am only an SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) holder,” he said after inspecting the flood-retention ponds in Taman Indah, Balakong, yesterday.

“I started out as a local activist and I have helped many petty traders and night mar- ket operators in this area.

“I am one who does not hold back from speaking the truth. I can work for the people. I am a native. I was born and raised here. I worked here and had a family here.

“The main issues facing the people here are traffic jams, flash floods and their safety. I know as I am affected, too.

“The flash flood issue at Taman Indah has been around for more than two decades despite the existence of retention ponds. The drainage system has yet to be upgraded, causing flash floods to occur. I urge the local council to resolve the issue immediately.”

Tan said he would fight for road toll charges to be abolished, or reduced.

He said the Barisan Nasional government had abolished toll collection at two toll plazas.

“In its manifesto, Pakatan Harapan promised to abolish tolls. But after 100 days in power, it is not able to even reduce toll charges.”
