‘Jho Low confident of being vindicated’
KUALA LUMPUR: A spokesman for businessman Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, through his attorneys, issued a statement describing the filing of criminal charges against him in Malaysia as a “case of trial by media” and “unfortunately, the circus continues”.
“These charges are obviously designed to distract from the (Tun Dr) Mahathir (Mohamad) regime’s disastrous seizure of the Equanimity yacht and its plan to sell it at an auction without any attempt to verify the ownership of the vessel through a proper legal process,” said Wells Haslem Mayhew Strategic Public Affairs co-chief executive officer Benjamin Haslem.
Haslem said Low maintained his innocence and was confident he would be vindicated.
“Low and his lawyers request that the public keep an open mind until all of the evidence comes to light.”
He said Low was conferring with his lawyers regarding what legal action he could take to address this latest political reprisal, but he stood by his earlier statements.
“He will not submit to any jurisdiction where guilt has been predetermined by politics and self-interest overrules legal process,” said Haslem.
“It is abundantly clear that it would be impossible for Low to get a fair trial in Malaysia, where the government has proven time and time again that it has no interest in the rule of law.”
The first set of criminal charges against Low and his father over money allegedly stolen from 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) was filed by police earlier today, according to a report in the edgemarkets.com website.
The charges mark the first criminal charges to be filed anywhere against Jho Low, who is believed to be with his family in China or Abu Dhabi.
