-

KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry will extend its cooperation to smoothen the process of establishing Universiti Johor, said Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik.

Maszlee, in welcoming the initiative to establish the university, expected to be one of the country’s leading higher learning institutions, said he had the opportunity to attend a discussion on the university recently.

“The Education Ministry was directly involved in lending its experts to aid in the establishment of Universiti Johor,” he said.

He said based on the outcome of the discussions, he was confident that Universiti Johor graduates would not only have a high level of competency in terms of knowledge and ability in academics and skills, but would also be equipped with high moral values.

On Aug 16, Johor Islamic Affairs and Education Committee chairman Aminolhuda Hassan informed the state legislative assembly that Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar had consented to the establishment of Universiti Johor in June.

Aminolhuda said several advisory panel and secretariat committees had been set up since early June to study the establishment of the university.

The plans for Universiti Johor were submitted to the Johor State Economic Planning Unit, the Education Ministry, Higher Education Department and a representative of the education minister on Aug 6.

The Universiti Johor concept focuses on fulfilling growth demands in rural areas and aims to stem the migration of youth from rural areas.

Universiti Johor aims to introduce a quadruple helix concept which sees each graduate developed through competency-based education to ensure that they meet the needs of the industries, government and community.
