Leiking floats ‘Sabah Card’ idea to identify genuine Sabahans

-

KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan Sabah deputy president Darell Leiking has suggested that the state government introduce a “Sabah Card” to identify genuine Sabahans and monitor their movement.

Darell said he had spoken to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal and he had agreed to consider it.

“This is not the government’s proposal. It’s my idea. We don’t need the prime minister’s permission to issue a Sabah Card as it does not affect the MyKad.

“MyKad proves one’s citizenship in Malaysia. The Sabah Card is for recording who are Sabahans,” he said yesterday.

He said the Sabah Card was not a replacement for MyKad.

To a question on which department should handle the card, he said it should be facilitated by a body within the Chief Minister’s Department as well as those handling the mobile court, including Chief Justice Tan Sri Richard Malanjun.

Darell said it would not be easy for MyKad holders to apply for a Sabah Card.

“Sabah Card is only issued to those who have MyKad. If the MyKad is obtained fraudulently, do you think people will dare to apply? I think not.

“The Sabah Card, in my idea, will benefit the people. If Shafie is able to sort out our state finances, maybe if all goes well, Amanah Rakyat Sabah will be revived,” he said.
