Yiwei wins 3m springboar­d bronze

Yiwei finally made significan­t progress in his career when the diver won a bronze in the Asian Games men’s 3m springboar­d event in Jakarta yesterday.

The 23-year-old posted a sixdive total of 456.20 points for his first individual medal in a major meet.

“It is a great feeling to win a medal in a major event.

“I kept my cool throughout the event and focused on my routines,” said Yiwei.

China’s Xie Siyi won the gold on 560.80 ahead of compatriot and silver medallist Cao Yuan (540.05).

Malaysia’s Ooi Tze Liang finished seventh on 413.05.

Meanwhile, Malaysian diver Nur Dhabitah Sabri finished fourth in the 1m springboar­d at the Gelora Bung Karno aquatic centre yesterday.

Dhabitah, who paired with Leong Mun Yee to win bronze in the 10m platform synchronis­ed, garnered 263.05 points from five dives.

Gold was won by China diver Wang Han (323.65) and silver went to teammate Chan Yiwen (306.50). South Korean Kim Suji pipped Dhabitah in the last two dives for bronze on 265.35.

Mun Yee ended up eighth on 224.68.

“I don’t know what happened as I gave my best but the points were low on my third and fourth dives.

“I feel a bit down because I wanted a medal on National Day, but failed,” said Dhabitah.

Today, Dhabitah will compete in her final event, the 3m springboar­d individual.
