WEI CHERN TARGETS NATIONAL CALL-UP
Pahang’s record breaker keen to represent country
PAHANG’S Low Wei Chern has been waiting for three years for the National Shooting Association of Malaysia (NSAM) to invite him to join the national team. And his dream could finally become a reality following his impressive performances in the shooting arena at the Perak Malaysia Games in Ipoh.
Wei Chern turned on the heat with gold medals in the men’s 25m rapid fire individual and team events yesterday.
The 20-year-old battered a 12-year-old record in the individual event by posting 563 points. The previous record was 558 set by Selangor’s Omar Sheriff Sheriff at the 2006 Kedah edition.
Terengganu’s Safirredzuan Salim (287) and Pahang’s Ridwan Awaluddin (287) won the silver and bronze, respectively.
Wei Chern also led Pahang, also comprising Muhammad Ridwan Awaluddin and Shasmainur Ariff Mohd Shah, to victory in the team event with a new record of 1,652 points.
The previous record of 1,636 points was set by Sarawak at the 2016 edition.
“It is a great moment for me as I not only won two titles but also broke two Games records. The entire team worked very hard in training for this edition,” said Wei Chern.
“My goal is to become a national shooter one day. I hope my performance here would be enough to earn a call up.
“I was invited to join the national team three years ago, but I had to decline as I was sitting for my Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations then.
“At the moment, I am working with my father, so if I get a call up, I will immediately grab the opportunity and give full commitment.”
Wei Chern hopes for a clean sweep when he competes in the 25m standard and 25m sports pistol events today and tomorrow.
