DPM wants interagency tie-up to curb profiteering
KENINGAU: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail wants the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry to work with the Customs Department to curb profiteering.
She said stern action should be taken against these errant businessmen to serve as a lesson to others to be more ethical, especially after the implementation of the Sales and Services Tax (SST).
“As consumers, it is important for us to know our rights and roles so that others do not take advantage of us.
“Consumers have to play their part to determine the price of goods in the market. This can be done when we plan and control our expenditure.
She said people should be wise in spending by comparing prices at different shops.
Dr Wan Azizah was speaking while officiating the Empowerment of Consumers community programme at the SM Ken Hwa hall here.
Present was Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
Dr Wan Azizah urged consumers to be eyes and ears of enforcement officers.
“The ministry has prepared many platforms for people to channel their complaints, including WhatsApp.
“It is undeniable that we have limited staff, therefore, I call on consumers to assist the government by providing information.”
Dr Wan Azizah, who also launched the Food Bank Malaysia programme at the event, said she was concerned about consumerism and always thinking of ways to reduce cost of living.
“For example, Food Bank Malaysia can help people in the B40 category and those from rural areas, such as Keningau.
“It will be a starting point to absorb the impact of increasing cost of living and reduce food wastage.
“I recommend shopping malls, manufacturers and hoteliers to join the programme.”
Food Bank Malaysia is an initiative by shopping malls to contribute food to the less fortunate.
