‘NIE helps students develop higher-order thinking skills’
JOHOR BARU: The New Straits Times’ Newspaper in Education (NIE) programme helps students master the English language.
Johor Baru SMK Infant Jesus Convent (SMKIJC) principal Afrinah Mohd Ikhsan said besides helping students master English, NIE also helped students develop higher-order thinking skills.
“I think the NIE workshop is one of the best teaching tools for the English language as it is not too rigid and not restricted to the classroom.
“It makes learning fun.”
She said she would recommend to the Johor Baru branch of the Malaysian School Principals Council to organise the workshop at every school in the district.
“The Johor Baru Education Office is supportive of the workshop as it has helped students improve their English language skills,” Afrinah said at the NIE workshop at SMKIJC.
A total of 190 Form Four students from five schools here took part in the one-day workshop, which was conducted by English language lecturer Vincent D’Silva.
The schools were SMKIJC, SMK Seta, SM Seni, SMK Damansara Aliff and SMK Taman Tasek Utara 2.
Afrinah said the workshop was part of SMKIJC’s mentoring project for the other four schools.
“We are the mentor for these schools as we are a high-performance school.
“The workshop is part of our activities with them. Other activities include an immersion programme, where a number of students from these schools will spend a week in our school to experience the environment here.”
She said SMKIJC had been conducting NIE workshops since 1998, adding that she hoped it would continue to conduct them in future.
