AN air-conditioning maintenance worker landed himself in hot water not only with police but also his elder brother, for lodging a false robbery report.

It was done because he was afraid of incurring his brother’s wrath after spending RM140, which was left in his safekeeping.

Jasin District Police chief Deputy Superintendent Arshad Abu said the 24-year-old made a false report accompanied by his brother, claiming that he was robbed by two masked robbers. The suspect feared he would receive a lashing from his brother if he found out that he had spent the money.

“The suspect claimed that he was at home at Taman Chempaka in Sungai Rambai when two masked men entered his home and tied him up with adhesive tape and rope.”

Arshad said the suspect claimed that he managed to set himself free and explained what transpired to his brother, before a report was lodged.

“However, further investigations revealed the suspect bought the adhesive tape and rope at a nearby shop.

“The suspect resorted to the act as he had spent the money left in his safekeeping,” he said.

Arshad said the suspect, who had a previous drug offence, was freed after his statement was taken.

“We have received three false reports this year claiming victims’ were robbed. We urge people not to lodge such false reports as it would create unnecessary panic.

“Those who lodge false reports will be investigated under Section 182 of the Penal Code.”
