Jamal pleads not guilty to charge

KUALA LUMPUR: Sungai Besar Umno division chief Datuk Seri Jamal Md Yunos pleaded not guilty at the Ampang magistrate’s court here yesterday to a charge of leaving the country illegally in May.

Jamal, 48, made the plea before magistrate Muhamad Firdaus Sadina Ali.

He was charged with leaving Malaysia through unauthoris­ed routes on May 25 under Section 5(2) of the Immigratio­n Act 1959/63.

The act provides for a maximum fine of RM10,000, or jail of up to five years, or both, if found guilty.

Deputy public prosecutor Goh Ai Rene offered bail at RM6,000 with one surety.

However, Jamal’s lawyer, Datuk Mohd Imran Tamrin, asked for a reasonable bail amount considerin­g that the offence provided a maximum fine of RM10,000.

“My client has several cases in court and has posted bail of more than RM20,000,” he said.

The court then set bail at RM4,000 with one surety and fixed Sept 24 for mention.

On May 25, Jamal went missing from Ampang Puteri KPJ Hospital, where he was receiving treatment for backache, after he was charged with committing a public nuisance offence by smashing beer bottles in front of the State Secretaria­t Building in Shah Alam last year.

On July 11, Jamal was slapped with the maximum RM400 fine by the Shah Alam magistrate’s court when he pleaded guilty to the offence.
