KUALA LUMPUR: BMW Group Malaysia has delivered about 5,320 electrified vehicles so far this year, signalling an uptrend in electric vehicle sales among Malaysians.

The company recorded 9,500 BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad vehicles, up more than 20 per cent over the same period last year.

“Of the total number of vehicles, 56 per cent comprised of electrified BMW and MINI vehicles, indicating an evolving sentiment among Malaysians for embracing Visionary Mobility in their automotive needs,” said BMW Malaysia managing director Harald Hoezl.

“BMW Group Malaysia sees itself as a key industry player capable of driving and shaping the national dialogue on the Mobility of the Future.

“Our leadership in Electro Mobility is reflected in the innovative range of electrified vehicles that have been launched under the BMW Group.

“Our commitment to driving emobility forward is strengthened through our initiatives to drive innovation, local assembly capabilities, awareness on new and clean technology for the automotive industry and changing the infrastructure for premium vehicles in the country,” said Hoezl .

BMW Malaysia yesterday unveiled its first BMW i8 Roadster, which it said epitomised the progressive hybrid sports car, at the Conference of the Electric Power Supply Industry 2018 (CEPSI 2018) here.

BMW Malaysia is the official EMobility partner for CEPSI 2018.

Since the introduction of the BMW i sub-brand in 2013, BMW Group said it had celebrated immense success with its E-Mobility portfolio worldwide.

Last year, BMW Group promised and delivered 100,000 electrified vehicles.

With over 82,000 electrified units already delivered in the first eight months of this year, a 43.3 per cent increase compared with the same period last year, it is on track to achieve the mark of delivering 140,000 electrified vehicles this year.

The unveiling of the BMW i8 Roadster was launched by Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Minister Yeo Bee Yin.

“The first-ever BMW i8 Roadster is the ultimate icon for Mobility of the Future.

The open-top hybrid twoseater sports car redefines driving enthusiasm, freedom and demonstrates e-Mobility as the visionary way forward for the convertible sports cars segment,” said Hoelzl.

This year, BMW i8 scored its fourth consecutive win of the International Engine of the Year Award since 2015, a welldeserved recognition of BMW i8’s supremely-designed drivetrain.
