-

Sunway University is offering two of its faculty members to undergo a highly research-intensive environment at University of Cambridge yearly.

Its chancellor Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, recently exchanged a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with the University of Cambridge’s Gonville and Caius College master Professor Sir Alan Fersht to commence the Scholars-in-Residence programme.

Cheah said the collaboration will further deepen the relationship between the two institutions, which has allowed for a robust exchange of ideas since they first linked up in 2014.

“The four-week programme offers them the opportunity to engage with and learn from leading research, and have access to the great libraries and laboratories of a world-renowned university and in their return produce worldclass Malaysian graduates that will contribute to the sustainable progress of Malaysia,” he said.

Fersht said: “I am delighted that the relationship is to be further enhanced by the establishment of the Jeffrey Cheah Scholar-in-Residence programme, through which we look forward to welcoming the very best academics from Sunway Education Group to undertake research in Cambridge.”

In conjunction with the MoA exchange, the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation also made a donation to the Tammy Chen Fund in support of the Tammy Chen Graduate Studentships at Gonville and Cauis College.

The studentships will be open to anyone in the world, provided they show the requisite academic merit. The college hopes that the first Tammy Chen Graduate Student will begin their studies at Caius in October 2018.

Among the many scholarships available under the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation are the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation-Sunway Group Scholarship, Jeffrey Cheah Travel Grants for Southeast Asia Studies at Harvard, Jeffrey Cheah Scholar-in-Residence at Oxford, Jeffrey Cheah Professorial Fellowships at Cambridge and Oxford, Sunway University Postgraduate by Research Scholarship and the Continuing Scholarships at Monash University Malaysia, Sunway University and Sunway College, and the Oxford-Jeffrey Cheah Graduate Scholarship.
