NEW EC CHAIRMAN ART HARUN DETERMINED TO DO HIS BEST
PUTRAJAYA: New Election Commission (EC) chairman Azhar Azizan@Harun is determined to carry out his duties in the best way possible.
“I’m truly honoured to be given such a huge responsibility. I will try my best to fulfil my duties based on the oath which I will take soon, as well as the rules and the law,” said Kedah-born Azhar, 56, also known as Art Harun.
“I haven’t taken the oath yet. I was just informed about the appointment.
“There are several things to be discussed.
“Firstly, because I’m a lawyer, I have to settle case files, transfer cases and other issues.”
His appointment was announced yesterday by Chief Secretary to the Government Datuk Seri Ismail Bakar.
Ismail said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had consented to Azhar’s appointment in line with Article 3 (114) of the Federal Constitution.
Azhar has law degrees with honours from Universiti Malaya and with merit from King’s College London and University of London.
He began his legal career in 1987 at Allen & Gledhill. In 1992, he started working with KH Koh, Azhar & Koh.
He has worked in renowned legal firms and has expertise in laws related to elections.
On June 13, EC announced that Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah’s tenure as chairman had been shortened, which was consented to by the king.
