A ‘lively voices’ evening
The Canticle Singers are back with tunes from classical Europe, Broadway and Hollywood, writes Dennis Chua
COME Oct 6 and 7, The Canticle Singers (TCS) proudly presents Voci Vivace (“lively voices” in Italian), an eclectic collection of songs from the world of opera, musicals, pop, spirituals and jazz. TCS invites music lovers to celebrate the songs and music of Alan Menken, Billy Joel, Bill Withers, Cole Porter, Frederick Loewe, George Gershwin, Gioachino Rossini, Greg Gilpin, Johann Sebastian Bach, John Lennon, Lionel Bart, Patrick Leong, Richard Rodgers, Stephen Sondheim and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in this two-hour show.
Fans can also immerse themselves with Go The Distance from Disney animated film Hercules, Ce’st Moi from the musical movie Camelot, Lean On Me from the album Still Bill, Nothing There To Love from Amazing Grace The Musical, Let It Be from the Beatles, A Celebration Of Company from Company, and Donne Mie La Fate A Tanti from Cosi Fan Tutte.
Voci Vivace will feature The Concert Chorale of 18 voices and guest artistes Ang Mei Foong (soprano), Cipriano De Guzman Jr (baritone), Patrick Leong (tenor) and Crimson Guirjem from the Philippine Ballet Theatre.
Mark Anthony Carpio, choirmaster of the world acclaimed Philippine Madrigal Singers will guest conduct the choral piece Ikaw on the Oct 7 performance.
Timothy Ooi will be the concert host with Alice Ang Ying Ying as the accompanist. The concert will also feature a special needs guest Joel Lau who has Asperger Syndrome, currently studying Food and Beverage Management at Berjaya College.
VOLUNTARY CHOIR
TCS is a voluntary choir established in Kuala Lumpur in 1992 and it celebrated its 25th Anniversary last year. Its music encompasses a wide repertoire of musicals, pop, folk, jazz, lounge, semi-classical and classical music.
Its members are Alain Boey, Esther Wong, Koh Sin Kit, Anatolia Chiam, Goh Yu Shaine, Lau Chuan Jie, Bibiana Ang, Ivan Liew, Radiance Lim, Brian Cheong, Ivy Chan, Samuel Goh, Chong Kin Kiat, Jeffery Chew, Vaness Ching, Chow Eu An, Joanne Poh and Yeoh Siu Xi.
TCS has had 26 productions and these have benefited charities, non-governmental organisations and worthy causes in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and the Philippines. TCS was awarded the Boh Cameronian Arts Award for Best Group Vocals in 2014 and 2011.
Voci Vivace is in aid of Purple Centres Foundation (PCF) in Manila, which provides education to children from dumpsite and cemetery communities in the Philippines.
