IPOH: Up to yesterday, there have been no new cases of alcohol poisoning in Perak, said state Health Committee chairman A. Sivanesan.

He said the number of deaths due to alcohol poisoning remained at two.

He said three individuals were receiving treatment at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital here.

He said the three men were recovering, including two who were in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

“The number of deaths remain at two, while those warded are recovering.

“There are no new cases in the last 24 hours,” he said after launching the Quality Use of Medicine Public Health Awareness Campaign at Ipoh Parade here yesterday.

The awareness campaign was organised by Quest International University Perak’s Quest Pharmacy Students Society.

Sivanesan urged manufacturers to step forward and clear the air on the presence of methanol in the alcoholic beverages.

“I hope they will come forward to explain the situation.”

The state government, on Thursday, reported that two men died of alcohol poisoning.

The first victim, 50, died at Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun on Monday, while the second victim, 39, died at a private hospital here on Tuesday.

The alcoholic beverages suspected of containing methanol include Grand Royal Whisky, Mandalay Whisky and Kingfisher beer.

Police said 23 deaths occurred in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, while dozens more had been hospitalised.

Those who suffer from symptoms such as nausea, blurred vision, shortness of breath, body ache and loss of consciousness are advised to seek treatment from the nearest medical facility.
