LEE CHONG WEI HAS NOSE CANCER

-

Everything started during the Indonesia Open (July). Chong Wei had complained that he was tired and it was also the first time I had seen him competing without his usual strength.

is now up to former World No 1 Lee Chong Wei on whether he should continue as a player or call time on what has been a hugely successful career to date.

National singles coach Hendrawan has asked all parties to give his shuttler space and allow him to undergo treatment.

Chong Wei has been diagnosed with early stage nose cancer.

Hendrawan admitted that he was shocked when he was first informed of Chong Wei’s illness but at the same time gave his full support to the 36year-old in regard to determining the best treatment.

“Everything started during the Indonesia Open (July). Chong Wei had complained that he was tired and it was also the first time I had seen him competing without his usual strength,” said Hendrawan.

“When we returned to Malaysia, Chong Wei did a medical check up and informed me when he got the doctor’s report. Of course I was shocked.

“I have been in contact with him since he went to Taiwan for treatment. He told me the treatment is going well.

“Let him fully recover before we discuss whether he will continue playing or not. What is important now is his health.”

Former BA of Malaysia (BAM) general manager Kenny Goh, who is also close to Chong Wei, stressed that now is not the right time to be discussing his future as a player.

“In this situation, I believe Chong Wei’s health is more important, whether he continues to play or not is only second or third (in importance),” said Kenny.

“Let him undergo treatment in peace and give him the space he needs.”
