SABAH archer Eugenius Lo and Terengganu sprinter Azreen Nabila Alias were named Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Malaysia Games yesterday following their impressive performances in the Perak edition.

Eugenius rewrote two games records (GR) and equalled a national record (NR) en route to winning three gold medals — 50m and 70m individual compound (both GR), and 30m individual compound (equalled NR). He also won a silver in the team event.

He dedicated his success of winning the award to his family, friends and coaches who supported Sabah’s archery team.

“It is a huge honour. This definitely makes all the hard work I had put into preparing for the games worthwhile,” said Eugenius after the closing ceremony in Ipoh yesterday.

“In 2016 (Sarawak edition), I won only one gold (in the team compound), so my achievement this time shows progress.”

Azreen, meanwhile, won gold in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m events.

Her winning time in the 100m erased a 10-year-old games record.

She dedicated the award to her late father, Alias Che Ngah who passed away in 2014.

“My father would have been very happy to see me achieve this success. He saw me compete at the Perlis Malaysia Games (2014), but I did not win any medals then,” said Azreen.

“I must than my mother Khadijah Ali and coach along with others who have been motivating and supporting me throughout the years.

Azreen’s feat is a great effort considering that she had struggled with hamstring injuries three months prior to the competition.
