Jobless man sent to gallows for murdering girlfriend

-

IPOH: An unemployed man has been sent to the gallows by the High Court here after he was found guilty of murdering his girlfriend two years ago.

Judge Datuk Che Ruzima Ghazali meted out the sentence to N. Sanderasegaran, 30, after the defence had failed to create reasonable doubt in the case.

Sanderasegaran was accused of killing S. Durga Devi, who was 17 then, in No 4, Kampung Batu Besi, Ladang Sengat, Simpang Pulai here, between 11pm on Feb 27, 2016, and 6am on Feb 28, 2016.

The accused was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code when he was first brought to the magistrate’s court here in March 11, 2016.

Throughout the trials, the prosecution had called 12 witnesses to the stand, while the defence provided three, including the accused.

Earlier, Che Ruzima, when she meted out her sentence, said the accused claimed that the victim was murdered by a robber who had entered her house at the time of incident.

The court found that the accused made up the robbery story based on the slight injuries on his arm while the victim suffered 37 injuries to her body.

An analysis by a chemist found that there were only DNA belonging to the victim and the accused at the scene.

She said it was impossible for a robber to spend that much time at a house (from 11pm to 6am) because usually robbers would do a quick job for fear of getting caught.

At the same time, she said the victim’s jewellery were still intact when the body was brought to the hospital for a postmortem.

It was highly unlikely that the robber would leave without taking any valuable items, she said.

The victim’s aunt, G. Tamal Sellvi, 37, said she was thankful that her niece’s murderer received a just punishment.

“Before I came to the court, I prayed that justice would be served because we lost a dear family member,” she said, adding that the family could not fathom how someone could commit murder in the name of love.
