No offer from BAM, says Rexy

- Helmi Talkah

Rexy Mainaky has claimed that he has not received an offer from the BA of Malaysia (BAM) to take up their new coaching director’s post.

Rexy was Malaysia’s doubles chief coach between 2005-12.

BAM revealed last month that Rexy, a former Indonesian men’s doubles player, is one of many candidates on their list for the job.

“I can’t say much because I have not heard anything from BAM. I still have an existing contract with the Thailand BA. However, if I receive an offer, I am ready to consider,” said Rexy yesterday.

The 50-year-old has been instrumental in Thailand’s achievements since he was hired in 2017. Their best result was reaching the Uber Cup final in Bangkok in May.

Before moving to Thailand, Rexy served as the Indonesian BA’s (PBSI) technical director.

While he no longer serves PBSI, his legacy continues to shine.

Among those spotted and developed when he was technical director were men’s singles Antony Sinisuka Ginting and Jonatan Christie, a gold medallist at the Indonesian Asian Games, along with men’s doubles World No 1 pair Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo.

“When I was in Indonesia, I revamped the entire coaching structure. This was supported by the top management of the national body. It is important for players to have discipline and goals.

“I also had meetings with the coaches on a regular basis as we wanted to be clear on our vision and mission.

“I brought in players like Ginting and Jonatan. In fact, Gideon was not even part of the national setup. I brought him in to partner Kevin,” Rexy added.
