‘Blast, tremor not caused by quake’
IPOH: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET) has confirmed that the mysterious explosion, followed by a tremor felt in Perak, particularly here, was not caused by an earthquake.
Its director-general, Alui Bahari, said the sound of the blast and the tremor had nothing to do with the earthquakes in Indonesia.
“The loud bang and tremor felt in Perak are not an earthquake as no earthquake warning was detected,” he said here yesterday.
Residents in several areas panicked when they heard a loud
bang akin to an explosion, which was followed by a tremor at 11am.
The incident went viral when Netizens claimed that it was due to the breaking of rocks at the quarry in Simpang Pulai here.
Some claimed the loud bang was due to training carried out by the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) using explosives.
However, RMAF denied such an exercise took place.
Ipoh district deputy police chief Supt Abdul Rani Alias said police would probe into the incident.
