Mitchell confident of snatching TCR Asia title

- Ishak Fadhli

driver Mitchell Cheah has no doubts he has the ability to overturn an 11-point deficit and take the Touring Car Racing (TCR) Asia championship title at the final leg in Shanghai this weekend.

The 20-year-old is currently second in the overall standings behind Liqui Moly Team Engstler teammate Luca Engstler, who leads the competition with 143 points. Lo Sze Ho (Maximum Racing) of Hong Kong is a distant third on 98 points.

Mitchell is confident of doing well at the Shanghai International Circuit, which he deems similar to the Sepang Circuit.

“I had been leading the championship standings until the South Korean leg where I dropped points. I had some technical issues but still managed to finish sixth in the first race,” said Mitchell.

“But I am only 11 points behind and there are still two races to go, I have to finish ahead of Luca in both races in Shanghai.

“There is a really good chance that I can win both races and take the championship.

“Shanghai is almost identical to Sepang, as it was designed by the same designer (Herman Tilke), a lot of the corners are similar to Sepang’s. It’s not a huge advantage but it does make things more familiar.

“I also feel that I have matured a lot since the start of the season since I have been (coached) by Malaysia’s first Formula One driver Alex Yoong.”

He has won two races in the series so far this season at Sepang in April and Buriram in June as well as three other podium finishes.

Mitchell is part of Sepang International Circuit’s driver talent development programme which is spearheaded by former Formula One driver Alex Yoong.
