3 convict brothers get royal pardon

-

KAJANG: Two nights ago, a Kajang Prison inmate dreamt he was being released from jail along with two of his brothers.

His dream became reality when he and his two younger brothers were granted the royal pardon from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong yesterday.

The siblings, aged 57, 51 and 49, were sentenced to a 24 years’ imprisonment over an offence committed in 2004.

Their identity and the nature of the offence were however withheld by the Prisons Department.

The eldest brother said he was grateful for being granted a pardon over the offence committed 15 years ago.

“Yesterday (Thursday), I dreamed of a woman greeting me and told me that I will be freed from the prison.

“For the past 15 years, I have been always praying to be a free man, and now my brothers and I are getting the freedom,” he said at Kajang Prison yesterday.

“I have learned and gained lots of experience in the past decade, particularly knowledge in Islam. I never skipped the sunat prayers every Monday and Thursday; it has helped me to control myself.

Meanwhile, Prisons Department deputy director (Prisons Policy) Supri Hashim said the brothers had shown repentance and met the conditions of the Royal Pardon.

“Every inmate has the right to submit a pardon petition with the assistance of the Prisons Department. The brothers handed over the petition in accordance with Regulation 113 of the Prisons Regulations 2000.

“They were supposed to serve the term till 2028, but they obtained the conditional pardon from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, hence, they are released from the prison now,” he said.

Supri said the pardon was meaningful to the Prisons Department which played important role in prisoners’ rehabilitation programme.
