Mountain to climb for Soniia in Taiwan Open

- Fabian Peter

Cheah will most likely not get past the semi-finals of the Taiwan Open today. But the shuttler is pleased to have made it this far.

Yesterday, the 25-year-old national women’s singles shuttler, staged a superb upset when she saw off fourth seed, Pai Yu Po 2119, 21-18 in front of her home fans in the quarter-finals.

It is only Soniia’s second semi-final appearance this year, after reaching the last four of the Thailand Masters in January.

When contacted in Taipei City, Soniia said: “Honestly, it wasn’t my best game.

“I was lucky to have somehow scraped through.

“My next match, however, will be extremely tough.”

The Malaysian world No 37, is up against world No 1, Tai Tzu Ying next.

It will also be the fourth meeting this year between the two, with a perfect record to the Taiwanese.

“I’ve played her so many times, but I have not beaten her.

“All I can say is, I will give my best, and hope for a miracle,” added Soniia.

In the mixed doubles, third seeds Chen Tang Jie-Peck Yen Wei, also checked into the semifinals, following a hard fought 1721, 21-12, 23-21 win over Indonesia’s Rinov Rivaldy-Pitha Haningtyas Mentari in the quarterfinals.

Tang Jie-Yen Wei, will play local duo, Yang Po Hsuan-Wu Ti Jung next.
