163 Kedah relief centres closed after families return home

-

ALOR STAR: The number of flood victims placed at temporary relief centres in three districts in the state dropped from 643 yesterday morning to 480 in the evening. The victims were from 156 families.

Four of the 11 relief centres were closed.

State Disaster Management Committee secretariat officer Imran Azemi said the four centres were Dewan Orang Ramai Keda Batu Lapan, Dewan Kampung Weng Luar, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Siong and Dewan Batu 60, all in Baling.

He said the centres were closed after the 96 people who were placed there returned to their homes.

Imran said two other relief centres, housing 11 families, were still open in Baling. They were Dewan Risda Kampung Tanjung Pari (15 victims) and Dewan Orang Ramai Kampung Banggol Dalam (six victims).

“Five other relief centres, in two other districts — Kota Setar and Kubang Pasu — are still operating. There are four centres in Kota Setar, housing 395 victims from 129 families. They are Surau Al-Syakirin (60 victims), SK Gunung (102), SK Titi Gajah (194) and SK Suka Menanti (39).

“There is only one centre in Kubang Pasu, at the Lubuk Batu Farmers Association, which is housing 64 victims,” he said.

Imran said the committee would continue to monitor the situation, which he added, was expected to improve in the coming days.

The three districts in Kedah began flooding on Monday following heavy rain. The rain also caused water held at the Muda dam to reach the maximum level.
