Two labourers face death for possessing drugs

PONTIAN: Two labourers are facing the death penalty after being found with drugs in two separate police raids in Kukup and Tanjung Piai near here.

Pontian district police chief Superinten­dent Mustafa Bakri Salleh said in the first raid at 2.30pm, police detained a 40year-old man with 20.3g of heroin worth RM500 at a house in Kampung Sungai Durian, Kukup.

“The man tested positive for morphine and was arrested under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death sentence upon conviction.

“Checks found that the suspect has 23 other records for drugrelate­d offences,” he said at the Pontian district police headquarte­rs here yesterday.

Mustafa Bakri said police arrested a 56-year-old man at an oil palm plantation in Kampung Sungai Belukang, Tanjung Piai, Kukup, at 1.45am on Tuesday.

“The suspect had five plastic wraps containing 150.3g of heroin worth RM4,000. He has 10 past records for drug offences. His urine tested positive for morphine.”

He said the suspect was investigat­ed under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952.

He said initial investigat­ions showed that the drugs were meant for distributi­on in the suspects’ areas.

In another case, Mustafa Bakri said police arrested a 29-year-old man at his home in Jalan Hassan, Permas Kukup, for possessing 114g of marijuana worth RM200, at 12.30pm on Sunday.

“The suspect, who has five records for the same offence, tested positive for marijuana. He has been detained under Section 39A(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a 10-year jail term and up to 10 strokes of the rotan upon conviction.”
