Malaysia meet 15-gold target

jumper Eddy Bernard gave Malaysia their 15th gold medal on the penultimat­e day of the Asian Para Games in Jakarta yesterday.

Malaysia’s 15-gold medal target was achieved after the 17-year old executed his 6.30m jump to clinch the gold ahead of Sri Lanka’s Maththaka Gamage Nuwan Indika (5.74m) and Rasyidi Rasyidi

(6.04m) who earned silver and bronze, respective­ly.

This became the second time the Negaraku echoed across the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium with the first from Ziyad Zolkefli in the men’s shot put.

The win was sweeter when Malaysia saw a one-two podium finish with Mohammad Aliff Mohamad Awi snagging the silver medal in the same event at 13.09m while Thailand’s Sanepoot Boonkong took the bronze (13.01m).

The athletics events also saw Muhammad Ashraf Hisham contributi­ng a silver medal after recording his personal best of 4:17.02s in the men’s 1500m T45/46 sprint.

Ashraf was outrun by Uzbekistan’s Muroldullo­ev Marufjon at 4:13.99s, the same event that saw Abdolpour Amin of Iran win the bronze medal (4:19.44s).

In badminton, Malaysia’s Didin Taresoh lost to China’s Chu Man Kai in the men’s individual SS6 final 21-13, 21-17 to earn himself a silver medal.

At the Jakarta Internatio­nal Velodrome, Asian Championsh­ip gold medallist Mohd Najib Turano (5:06.175) was outclassed by host nation’s Muhammad Fadli Immamuddin (5:03.605s) in the men’s C4 Individual Pursuit 4000m for he silver medal as India’s Gurlal Singh took bronze medal at 6:00.264s.

At the Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex, the national lawnbowls team had a fruitful outing to produce two silver and two bronze medals in four separate mixed pairs events.
