1 died, 4 in­jured in Gerik bus-lorry crash

IPOH: One per­son was killed and four oth­ers in­jured in an ac­ci­dent in­volv­ing an ex­press bus and two lor­ries on the East-West High­way near Gerik yes­ter­day.

The bus driver, Mohd Az­izi Ab­dul Ghani, 37, died at the scene.

The four in­jured were lorry driver Mohd N’ain Halim, 43, and his son Muham­mad Aza­har, 17, and bus pas­sen­gers Iz­zarul Amira Nasir Pu­tra, 28, and Nur Ama­lina Na­jwa Ab­dul Razak, 23.

Thirty other pas­sen­gers es­caped un­hurt.

It is learnt that the ac­ci­dent oc­curred when the bus, which was on its way to Ke­lan­tan, crashed head-on with a lorry car­ry­ing saw­dust when it over­took a lorry car­ry­ing iron loop wires.

“The col­li­sion killed the bus driver at the scene.

“His body was taken to Gerik Hospi­tal for a post-mortem,” state Traf­fic En­force­ment and In­ves­ti­ga­tion Depart­ment head Su­per­in­ten­dent Ah­mad Ad­nan Basri said.

A state Fire and Res­cue Depart­ment spokesman said the depart­ment re­ceived a dis­tress call at 12.49am and a team was de­ployed to the scene im­me­di­ately.
