1 died, 4 injured in Gerik bus-lorry crash

IPOH: One person was killed and four others injured in an accident involving an express bus and two lorries on the East-West Highway near Gerik yesterday.

The bus driver, Mohd Azizi Abdul Ghani, 37, died at the scene.

The four injured were lorry driver Mohd N’ain Halim, 43, and his son Muhammad Azahar, 17, and bus passengers Izzarul Amira Nasir Putra, 28, and Nur Amalina Najwa Abdul Razak, 23.

Thirty other passengers escaped unhurt.

It is learnt that the accident occurred when the bus, which was on its way to Kelantan, crashed head-on with a lorry carrying sawdust when it overtook a lorry carrying iron loop wires.

“The collision killed the bus driver at the scene.

“His body was taken to Gerik Hospital for a post-mortem,” state Traffic Enforcemen­t and Investigat­ion Department head Superinten­dent Ahmad Adnan Basri said.

A state Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said the department received a distress call at 12.49am and a team was deployed to the scene immediatel­y.
