Darrshan bags his first Grade 4 title

- Fadhli Ishak

up and coming tennis player Darrshan Suresh tasted success in Taiwan yesterday.

He clinched his maiden ITF Grade 4 doubles title at the GreenMax Cup International Junior Championships.

Darrshan, 17, partnering Mann Shah of India, secured a comfortable 6-2, 6-4 win over Carl Emil Overbeck of Denmark and Sweden’s Rikard Raad in the final at the Kaohsiung Yang Ming Tennis Centre.

He said it was a harder match then it looked on paper.

“We were not sure if we could win it. But we served and returned well and were not broken even once.

“One of them had a weak serve, so we focused on (breaking) that,” he said.

Darrshan has won five titles on the ITF junior circuit this year though the earlier wins were in Grade 5 tournaments on clay. This is his first title on a hard court this season.

Darrshan thanked his coach S. Selvarajoo, the Lawn Tennis Association of Malaysia and his parents Sumathi Suresh and Suresh Vaithilingam, for their support.
