HEAVY rain caused a landslide that struck a shed at Batu 49, Kampung Tiga, Kuala Terla, here yesterday. The incident also claimed the lives of three Myanmar nationals — two women and one man — aged between 23 and 34, believed to be workers of a farm near the scene.

Cameron Highlands police chief Deputy Superintendent Ashari Abu Samah said police received information on the incident at 10.40am.

“We received a call from a member of the public who told us three of his friends were buried under the landslide in the village.

“A search-and-rescue operations was carried out involving three officers and seven personnel from the district police headquarters, and two officers and 16 personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department.”

He said on arrival at the scene at 11.30am, the two women were already found by their friends and confirmed dead.

“The third victim was buried and the search-and-rescue operation was conducted with the cooperation of the locals.

“It is believed that the victims were sleeping when the landslide struck their house which was built illegally at the bottom of the hill.

“The landslide occurred due to heavy rain,” he said yesterday.

Ashari said the police only had a few details on the identities of the victims as they could not find their identification documents.

“The victims were identified as Aung Thong, 23, his wife Naing Vai, 23, and another woman known as Mu Aye Aye, 34.

“The bodies have been sent to Sultanah Hajjah Kalsom Hospital in Tanah Rata for a postmortem,” he said.
