PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s victory in the Port Dickson by-election was unique as he received undivided support of all races in the constituency.

Party deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali said the victory also proved that the Pakatan Harapan government continued to receive the support of Malaysians.

“I feel grateful and would like to thank voters in Port Dickson for their continuous support for the PH government and the leadership of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as prime minister.

“The victory is unique as we gained undivided support of all races in Port Dickson.

“This shows a new support trend and people’s confidence in PH,” he said.

Azmin, who is also economic affairs minister, said this after attending Eco World Foundation Appreciation Luncheon here yesterday.

Present were foundation chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, EcoWorld Malaysia chairman Tan Sri Liew Kee Sin, president and chief executive officer Datuk Chang Khim Wah and executive director Datuk Voon Tin Yow.

In Taiping, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng congratulated Anwar for winning the by-election with a majority of 23,560 votes.

“This win is bigger than what was achieved in the 14th General Election (GE14), indirectly showing people’s unwavering support for Pakatan Harapan,” he said after opening the Perak DAP Convention here.

In Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said Anwar’s victory in Port Dickson proved that people had high hopes that PH would continue to rule the country.

He said the victory was expected and although the percentage dropped in the number of votes, Anwar still won with a bigger majority.

“This is a victory for PH, and the Sabah state government will always be prepared to cooperate with the ruling coalition at the federal level, and to strengthen the direction for the formation of a new Malaysia,” he said.

He said this after attending the Sabah Chapter of the Malaysian Architects Association Dinner here on Saturday.

On Saturday, Anwar won the seaside parliamentary seat with a 23,560-vote majority over Pas candidate Lieutenant-Colonel (Rtd) Mohd Nazari Mokhtar.

Anwar polled 31,106 votes, while Nazari came in second, with 7,456 votes.

All five independent candidates in the by-election lost their deposits, including Port Dickson native and former Negri Sembilan menteri besar Tan Sri Isa Samad, who polled 4,230 votes.

Independent candidates Stevie Chan polled 337 votes, followed by Lau Seck Yan (214), Kan Chee Yuen (154) and Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan (82).

Anwar is expected to be sworn in as Port Dickson member of parliament at the Dewan Rakyat today.

With the victory, Anwar is just a few years away from being the successor to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the eighth prime minister, which was agreed upon by the four PH parties before GE14.
