RM6.5m for needy students
PETALING JAYA: The EcoWorld Foundation is striving to help underprivileged Malaysians to stay in school so that they can receive education and improve their lives.
Its chairman, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, said education was a critical element in breaking the cycle of poverty faced by many Malaysians.
He said the foundation, through its flagship Students’ Aid Programme, had assisted 3,000 students at primary, secondary and tertiary levels.
“We are happy to learn that some of the students whom we have helped, from primary to their secondary and tertiary education, have graduated from universities.
“We are proud of them and their achievements. We have 36 students in colleges and universities.
“Your support, encouragement and assistance have helped the foundation fulfil its aim to help needy Malaysians from all walks of life, ethnic groups and religions,” he said at the EcoWorld Foundation appreciation luncheon to honour supporters and donors.
Present were Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, EcoWorld Development Group Bhd chairman Tan Sri Liew Kee Sin, president and chief executive officer Datuk Chang Khim Wah, executive director Datuk Voon Tin Yow and the foundation’s trustees Tan Sri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad and Philip Mathews.
Lee said among the foundation’s new initiatives was the “Empowered to Teach programme to help Orang Asli pre-school children.
He expressed his gratitude to the foundation’s sponsors and donors, who donated RM6.5 million “despite challenging economic times”.
