Getting the best of all UTM faculties

-

UNIVERSITI Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is offering its Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) to foundation, matriculation and diploma graduates.

The degree is an interdisciplinary programme that facilitates a timely application to postgraduate studies or immediate opportunities for professional career advancement.

It is offered to students who wish to tailor their own curriculum and study at their own pace.

This degree has long been established in developed countries, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Australia and Singapore.

It gives students a wide range of subjects to study based on their interest and career development.

This dynamic concept allows students the flexibility to learn according to the latest trends in education, in line with the 21st century teaching and learning concept.

Thus, graduates will be more progressive through self-adaptation of knowledge and skills.

They have the ability to cope with modern trends in society, like the Fourth Industrial Revolution and rise of the digital economy.

The BGS’ fluid curriculum is one of the elements applied in the Higher Education 4.0 ecosystem, which emphasises knowledge, industry and humanity.

The curriculum is in line with current objectives in the country’s higher education system.

BGS students will study full-time at the UTM main campus in Johor Baru. The course can be pursued between four and six years.

The implementation of UTM’s BGS programme takes into account the concept of an organic curriculum.

Under the programme’s Elective General and Specific Elective components, students are free to take subjects that are relevant to contemporary needs and meet their career objectives in five main areas — management, science, computing, technology and humanities.

This allows them to get the best learning experience from all seven faculties and 29 schools in UTM.

Help is available from the academic and career adviser, who guides students on the best subjects to take.

At the end of the course, graduates should find their intellectual and innovative capabilities enhanced.

New approaches are also needed to ensure that students can build their own knowledge through meaningful experience and technological assistance.

These advantages provide added value and competitiveness required by employers and industries.

The BGS programme utilises a student-oriented Learning Innovation Model (Nali) and blendedlearning approach.

Its lessons are based on problems, scenarios and case studies conducted online and face-to-face in the classroom. Students are also required to use an e-learning system to strengthen their understanding in each subject.

In this regard, the university has equipped itself with complete, upto-date infrastructure to ensure a conducive learning environment.

UTM has two libraries to provide quality learning material through books, theses and digital resources, such as electronic journals and research videos.

It also has a wide range of experts in its academia, with each member having an extensive teaching experience.

These are part of the university’s aspiration to produce competitive graduates for the job market.

Intake is twice a year. Students can choose to enrol in February or September.
